Chief Photographer, The Factory Studio
Ed Abella is the Chief Photographer and founder of The Factory Studio, a creative space rooted in the belief that photography is a vehicle for meaning, symbolism, and human connection. His work spans commercial, fine art, conceptual, fashion, and lifestyle photography, unified by a distinct voice that seeks to evoke thought and emotion in every frame.
Ed began his creative path at Ateneo de Cagayan, later studying photography at the College of Saint Benilde – School of Design and Arts. Although he chose to leave formal education to pursue real-world opportunities, he completed a specialized street photography course at Seattle Central College, where his instinct for visual storytelling was refined through documentary-style shooting and environmental portraiture.
With over a decade of experience, Ed has built a career around both artistic depth and entrepreneurial spirit. His solo exhibit, Phase to Face, debuted in 2023 at The Factory Studio, showcasing over 50 portraits that examined identity, performance, and emotional presence. The series blended dramatic lighting, controlled shadow work, layered styling, and symbolic staging—inviting viewers to confront the seen and the unseen within themselves. Each portrait was designed not just as a likeness, but as a constructed persona, revealing the tensions between vulnerability and presentation.
He has served as a correspondent for Launchpad Magazine, been featured in Gold Star Daily and Outrage Magazine, and participated in the group exhibit Hulagway, advocating for HIV/AIDS awareness through visual art. As a creative leader, Ed has shared his perspective as a resource speaker at Ateneo de Cagayan, Ayala Centrio’s Art Tents, and the University of the Philippines in Cebu, and was invited to judge the Municipality of Medina’s first photography competition, recognizing emerging talent in regional visual arts.
In commercial work, Ed brings his visual language into branding and editorial campaigns, having photographed for brands such as Kumaykay River Farm, Early Bird (Chino’s Deli), Skin Rev, LA Dental, Rayna & Son, Skin Naturals, NV My Skin, Bibu-Q, House of Yang, Yumi Nails, Ayumi Lashes, and Bettina Clothing. He has worked with ABS-CBN Dream Board artists, and has collaborated with fashion designers such as Juniel Doring, Alma Mea Roa, Benjie S. Manuel, Gil Macaibay, and Kiko Domo.
Outside of photography, Ed is a co-producer of Models Bootcamp, a workshop cultivating emerging fashion and modeling talent. He also runs Joren Pawnshop, a family-owned business, and formerly owned Kagay-an Coffee Cartel, a beloved café-art space that helped cultivate Cagayan de Oro’s creative community.
Ed Abella’s body of work reflects a deep respect for the power of visual language—its ability to express what words cannot, to build cultural dialogue, and to give people the chance to be seen fully, honestly, and with artistic care.
